Effectiveness is a powerful, universal, unconscious drive. Adding conscious desires makes it even more powerful – adding skill derived from knowledge, experience and practice turns it into a potential for unlimited achievement.
Naturally there are things and events that we can’t control, but we can always control our response to them with skill, experience and practice.
If you are a captain of a sailboat, you can’t force the wind and the currents to do what you want, but with skill, practice and experience you can adjust your rudder and sail to the wind and currents to get where you want to go. If you have a clear simple strategy for dealing with any conditions you meet you will always be able to operate at maximum effectiveness.
Effectiveness = Motivation multiplied by confidence multiplied again by concentration and reduced by resistance.
To increase your effectiveness increase your motivation, confidence and concentration while eliminating the stuff that gets in the way.
The most fundamental motivations are toward pleasure and away from pain. You may know someone who seems motivated toward pain, like someone who does painful workouts or is in an abusive relationship. This is a different level of motivation which is based on fear or love. Because we have memory and imagination we are not limited to pleasure or pain in the present moment. We have the ability to remember pleasure and pain and we have the ability to imagine or anticipate pleasure and pain.
Fear generates the responses of fight or flight.
Love generates the responses of peace and play.
Individuals or groups can be motivated into action by a concept called “felt needs” which is in contrast to obvious needs. These desires or felt needs can be: Awareness, Freedom, Purpose, Sensation, Relating, Power, Achievement.
There are two types of confidence, external and internal. We can have external confidence in the behaviour of someone or something else based on memories of past, experience in the present and expectations about the future,(highly influenced by your belief in someone else’s authority. ) The main problem with external confidence is we are entirely dependent on events, circumstances and decisions which we have no control and limited influence.
Internal confidence comes from your decisions about yourself – beliefs about your worth, skills, ability to cope with change and source of power.
The best way to increase internal confidence is to make two decisions, FIRST to decide what you believe to be true, SECOND to decide to never doubt the first decision.
Confidence increases effectiveness by ONE reducing the inhibiting effect fear has on your skills and abilities, TWO stimulating you to be alert for opportunities.
Overconfidence is really arrogance masking fear.
Concentration can be hard or easy depending on if it is forced or natural.
RESISTANCE – The law of inertia suggests an object at rest tends to resist being moved. The moving object resists being stopped (old habits and patterns) or being moved in a different direction. Put another way existing habits tend to maintain themselves.
4 main causes in our lives that reduce our happiness, by causing resistance to increases in our motivation, confidence and concentration are F.U.D.S.
FEAR – Instinctual fear warns of immediate danger. Manufactured fear based on memory and fantasy narrows awareness, restricts freedom, inhibits relationships and drains away power.
Fear is rooted in memory and fantasy. If you are going to have fantasies, why not make them good ones?
UNHAPPINESS – The antidote for unhappiness is happiness. But, that’s too big a leap for most people. The most effective antidote is really forgiveness.
DOUBT – It’s been said Satan has many weapons in his war against goodness, hate, jealousy, greed, but the best weapon is an old pitted wedge called doubt! Doubt is a real destroyer of effectiveness when it becomes habitual, judging everything in a negative way with no acknowledgement given to the positive side. In the form of criticism, it can deflate motivation faster than anything else. Discernment and scepticism are helpful.
STRESS – comes from within when we chose to react.
With a bit of discipline and practice, the principles can lead to a life of adventure, joy and harmony.
